For the place was at once the same, and yet not the same. The cottage of his fathers had disap- peared. There was a village; but the shapes of the houses were all strange, and the trees were strange, and the fields, and even the faces of the people. Nearly all remembered landmarks were gone; the Shinto temple appeared to have been rebuilt in a new place; the woods had vanished from the neigh- boring slopes. Only the voice of the little stream flowing through the settlement, and the forms of the mountains, were still the same. All else was un- familiar and new. In vain he tried to find the dwell- ing of his parents; and the fisherfolk stared won- deringly at him; and he could not remember having ever seen any of those faces before.

その彼の父親たちの小屋は消え去っていた。村があったが、家屋の形はどれも風変わりで、木々も奇妙で、原っぱも、人々の顔さえ変わっていた。そこにあったはずのほとんどのものがなくなっていた。神社は別の場所に建て直されたようで、近所の坂から森が消えてた。ただ、人々の住む場所を流れていた小川のせせらぎと山々の姿だけはまだ同じようにあった。そのほかの何もかもが馴染みなく、新しくかった。彼は両親の住む場所を探したが無駄だった。そして、漁師たちが不思議そうに彼をじろじろ見た。どの顔も以前に見た覚えがなかった。」
