ブリティッシュイングリッシュ（しかもサッカー）独特の言い方なのですが（アメリカ人に訊くと、よくわからないと言われました）、以下の文の一番最後の箇所、
getting a march on someone else
とはどういう意味なのでしょう？
わかる方がいらっしゃいましたら、
教えてください。

get (gain/steal) a march on [人]　で、

「〈人〉を(ひそかに)追い越す[出し抜く]」
「〈人〉に忍び足で近づく」
He stole a march on his rival. ライバルを出し抜いた

特にイギリス英語だとか、サッカー用語というわけではありません。

動詞は steal が一番多いようですし、ややくだけた言い方ではありますが。
