以下の記事はこのカテで一か月ほど前にある方が提供してくださったThe Guardian の ”Abortions at home are safe - pilot study” というタイトルの記事の一部です。

私の疑問は最後の段落の最後の文の “St Mary's hospital” はその直前の文にある ”her （= Ms Butler’s) hospital” と同一の病院かどうかです。私の直感は別の病院のような気がしますが、よくわかりません。ご教示ください。

Women who are less than nine weeks pregnant can safely have medical abortions at home, according to the head of a government-backed pilot project.

別の病院だと考えられます。

大掛かりな疫学研究に先立って、研究の概略を決めたりデータの傾向を知るために先行調査を行ないます。これが"Pilot study"です。国家レベルのプロジェクト、しかも妊娠中絶のような政治的に微妙な問題がからむ場合はpailotの段階からまず間違いなく複数の施設で調査が始められるでしょうね。

また引用文中、"a government-backed pilot project"に続いて（途中省略）のあと"one pilot"という表現がありますね。この時点で研究に参加している施設が他にもあることがほのめかされています。

私自身はご指摘いただくまでは 　it ⇒　St Mary's hospital 　と読んでいました。文のトピックがSt Mary's hospital in Londonであり、同じトピック内の節の主語である代名詞itはこのitに最も近い位置にあるSt Mary's hospital in Londonであろうとつい思い込んでいました。今考えてみるともしこの英文が、

It is undertaking the second trial, St Mary's hospital in London confirmed.

となっていれば、明らかに　it ⇒　St Mary's hospital と思ったでしょうけれど。

一方、直前の文でShirley Butlerさんが属する病院が確かに話題になっていますかので、回答＃１さんのご指摘にもなるほど、と思うようになりました。

ということでわからなくなってきました。

私も違う病院であると思います。

itが指すものがher hospitalと考えるのが自然でしょう。
「聖メアリー病院は、彼女の病院が二回目の実験に取り掛かったことを確認した。」

理由としては、
1、She also asked for her hospital not to be named …
の文章で、彼女の病院が聖メアリー病院ならShe also asked for St Mary's hospital where she works…のような書き方をするはずです。

2、なぜSt Mary's hospitalが突然のように出てきたか？この病院のホームぺージを見る限り、流産に関してはかなり専門的な病院らしいので、その病院が他の病院で「人工中絶に関してこういう実験している」と言う情報を確認した。という解釈が出来るからです。(大抵、専門情報は専門的な機関が抑えますので)

以上の2点より違う病院であると判断します。
