日本の国会が Diet なのはどうして

日本の国会が英語で　Diet というのはドイツから借用してきたからというのは本当ですか？Reichstag だと思っていたんですが。Diet はドイツ語で使われていたのでしょうか？

The word diet derives from Latin and was a common name for an assembly in Medieval Germany. The Meiji constitution was largely based on the form of constitutional monarchy found in nineteenth century Prussia and the new Diet was modelled partly on the German Reichstag and partly on the British Westminster system

なぜ diet かの理由は分かりませんが、

ドイツ語では Parlament とのことですので、違うのではないかと。
ドイツ語に Diet という単語は見当たらないようです。
