Time scales have changed dramatically in the twentieth century. The biggest changes in our interpretation of the distant past have taken place within the last twenty years as new schemes of dating, new discoveries of material remains and new evaluations of evidence have come so fast that earlier surveys have been rapidly outdated. 【It is through our late-twentieth-century sense of time and space, so different from that of previous centuries in that it is governed by science, that we now step backwards and reach out to our most remote ancestors. 】This does not mean that we should ignore the journeys of past explorers of history when we make our own journey through time, for the social historian learns much about social history from out-of-date and discarded explanations.

It is through our late-twentieth-century sense of time and space, so different from that of previous centuries in that it is governed by science, that we now step backwards and reach out to our most remote ancestors.

　入り組んだ英語ですね。
全体は、It.....that we now step backwards and reach out to our most remote ancestors. の強調構文です。この強調構文の定式的な訳は、that 以下を訳し、最後にIt.....thatの.....を訳します。

　step backwardsは、「後ずさりする」ですが、過去に遡ることを意味しているでしょう。reach out to～は「～に手を差し伸べる」で、遥か過去の祖先たちのことを知ろうとすることです。そこまで訳しますと――

　(a) われわれ現代人が、過去に目を向け、遥か古代の歴史をしろうとするのは

　で、今度は、It.....thatの.....の部分です。

　throughは「～を通して、～によって」です。

　(b) われわれ２０世紀末に生きる人間の時空感覚を通してです

　これは、間に長い挿入句があるので判り難くなっていますが、主文は

It is through our late-twentieth-century sense of time and space that we now step backwards and reach out to our most remote ancestors.

で、文頭の“It”は“that”以下を受ける仮主語です。

「我々が現在、一歩さがって最も遠い祖先たちへと手を伸ばすのは、20世紀終わり頃の我々の時間・空間感覚を通してである」

です。で、“sense”を修飾している挿入句ですが、

>>その感覚が科学によって治められたという点で、非常に私達の大切な感覚とは異なっているので、

“previous”は“precious”ではありません。よって「大切な」ではなく“previous centuries”で「それ以前の世紀」でしょう。「前世紀」としてしまいがちですが、“centuries”と複数形なのでそれでは間違いです。また“govern”には確かに「治める」という意味がありますが、ここはどう考えても「支配する」でしょう。よって、

「――科学によって支配されているという点でそれ以前の世紀と非常に異なる感覚であるが――」

を「～空間感覚」と「を」の間に入れてみては如何でしょう？
