in whichが全く理解できません。

今まで、全然向き合っていなかった"in which" が最近文などによく出てくるようになったのですが、全然わかりません。
Considering the whole span life,the opposite effect, in which life actually modifies its surroundings, has been relatively slight.

この文の訳がなかなか出来ません。"in which"　は何を表しているのでしょうか？
誰かお教え下さい。

★テクストは、the whole span life ですか？ the whole span of life ないし、the whole life span のような気もしますので、仮にそちらで考えます。

（１）誰もそうだと思うのですが、関係代名詞が出てきたときは、その関係代名詞に、先行詞を入れて読み進めます。

Considering the whole span of life,the opposite effect,【in which life actually modifies its surroundings】, has been relatively slight.

の【】部分が関係代名詞節ですね。ということは、which に先行詞のthe opposite effectを入れた

in the opposite effect life actually modifies its surroundings

が、整序すれば、完全な文章になるということです。

意味の流れは

　「正反対の効果において」→「生命が現実的に環境を変える」ですから、「生命が、正反対の効果において、現実的に環境を変える」（★Ａ）という文章に違いありません。英語では、

　です。

go_urnさん。丁寧な回答ありがとうございます。私はthe oosite effectのことは全然考えずに特にこのthe opposite effectは抽入？なようなもので、文の中の,however,や,moreover,見たいな物と勝手に解釈しておりました。
先行詞はthe whole span of earthly timeと思い訳していたのですがthe opposite effectだったのですね。スムーズに訳せました。本当にありがとうございます。

その前の文章や段落で、「環境によって人生が変化する」という

主張がありませんでしたか？

in which~　の下りは the opposite effect　を表しています。

the opposite effect, in which life actually modifies its surroundings
（人生の方が環境を変化させるという、逆の影響）
ときていますので、「人生が環境を変化させる」が
「逆の影響」となる、元々の主張、流れがあるはずです。

長い人生/寿命を考えると、（環境が人生を変化させるの反対となる）
人生が環境を変化させる、という影響は相対的にないに等しい。

この場合の in which は、学術分などで少し知的な書き方がしたい時に
which の代わりに使用するパターンの in which かと思います。
考え込まず、 which に脳内変換してください。

ちなみに、人生の多くの時間は正の影響、すなわち、周囲の状況あるいは環境に流されて過ごしているものだ　とでも言いたいのでしょうか。

分かりにくい文章で、難問です。

全人生の長さを考えたとき、人の生活がその周囲の状況を実際に変えるというような、逆方向の影響は相対的にわずかだった。
which = effect
下記のようなもう少しやさしい文章で練習されたら如何でしょうか。

This is the computer in which the virus was discovered.
This is the computer that the virus was discovered in.

The bird landed in the field where a garden had been planted.
The bird landed in the field in which a garden had been planted.

前後がないのでよくわからんですが, この which は前の the effect じゃないかな.

Life actually modifies its surroundings in the effect. が挿入されているんだと思う.
