(288) Let a brisk……

Let a brisk fellow of forty years follow them, with a loaf of four quarters 1315 and eight slices 1316 for his dinner, one who will attend to his work and drive a straight furrow and is past the age for gaping after his fellows, but will keep his mind on his work. (1) Let a brisk fellow of forty years follow them, with a loaf of four quarters 1315 and eight slices 1316 for his dinner, one who will attend to his work and drive a straight furrow and is past the age for gaping after his fellows, but will keep his mind on his work.
自分の仕事に精を出す者は、one who will attend to鋤で真っすぐ畝をつけるし、(彼の)仲間を羨んでafter his fellows、気をそらす年頃でもないからpast the age for gaping、熱心に仕事に打ち込むだろう。

<質問>
(a) a loaf of four quarters 1315 and eight slices 1316 for his dinner
(b) after his fellowsについて
 (c) past the age for gapingについて
    gaping;間隙、隙間→差を感じる→「気をそらす年頃を過ぎる」とした。
<その他>
*brisk;活発な、精力的な
*them;QA287のOxenのこと
*loaf; パン(のかたまり);主食かどうかは分からない。
*1315 ; The loaf is a flattish cake with two intersecting lines
scored on its upper surface which divide it into four
equal parts.
*1316; The meaning is obscure. A scholiast renders' giving eight
mouthfulls'; but the elder Philostratus uses the word
in contrast to 'leavened'.

(2) No younger man will be better than he at scattering the seed and avoiding double-sowing; for a man less staid gets disturbed, hankering after his fellows.

<質問>
(f) a man less staidのstaidは、
    この文は、hankering after his fellowsと続きますが、

hankering after his fellows.
He went back home, playing tennis.
→He went back home, and played tennis.

one who = a brisk fellow of forty years or any man who is in 40's.
he, his = either of above men.

(1)and is past the age for gaping after his fellows.
(2)a man less staid gets disturbed, hanking after his fellows.
