How could these men so resolutely refuse to reconize truth? Did it take a world upheaval to make them realize that our Zero fighter - which long ago had been the world's best - could be outflown, outdived, outclimed, and outgunned by the Hellcat, as well as by many other new planes I had not yet seen?

これらの文章の前にも it が指しているような単語は出てこないのです。

these men は、司令部の将校連中を指します。
司令部の将校連中が、日本の戦国時代（非近代的な）文句の「南無八幡台大菩薩」(We believe in the Merciful God of War)の旗を掲げて特攻を命じているのを批判しているくだりです。

itは、その後に出てくるto make them realize Zero fighter... could be outflown ..."を指しています。

Did it take a world upheaval
それには天地がひっくり返ることが必要だったのだろうか？

昔は世界最高だった零戦が、ヘルキャットや私が見たこともない新しい飛行機に、速度や下降、上昇、機銃の性能で追い抜かれているかもしれないと、やつらに認識させるのには。
