　おっしゃる通りです。

　この文を書いた人は、アメリカ人の判断基準が、近代的か、非近代的か、の単純２択しか無いことに問題の原因があることに気づいていないようですね。

二十世紀終わりの日本と言う題は、昔の物にしろ、新しいのにしろ、世界秩序の単純性を困惑させる、（なんじゃこの英語って感じですね）

　人種や地域の境界を越え、近代世界組織の基礎に作られた時間と空間を越え、資本の巨大な蓄積をあらゆる場所に置き、「日本」は、遍在的で、非定住的で、多国籍的である。

　同様な経済力を持つ国家で、（日本のように）領土的に制限され、民族的に標準化され、文化的に制限された国家は無い。日本人自身、自国は小さな島国で、均質な国だと言っている。

　経済的広がりは、国家的引っ込み思案と、文化の所為だともっとも頻繁にあとにされる階級や人種による国内差がないことで言い訳されている。

　偉大なる同化者としての日本の姿は存在論的障害や歴史的混乱を説明する時に使われる．曰く日本は同化する、移民や米国車は別としても、それ以外は同化する

　生産し、蓄積し、消費するという、目まぐるしい回転の（後）近代のきらびやかさを取り込みながらも、伝統的な、不変の文化の芯はそのまま保持しているのだ。
