You were stupid to do such a thing.という文章は、It was stupid of you to do such a thing.という文章に書き換えられるそうなのですが、なぜofとなるのでしょうか。意味上の主語(?)ならばforかなと思いました…。

意味上の主語を for で表す場合と、of で表す場合があります。

of をとるのは人の行為や性質について判断する形容詞です。

He is foolish to meet her again.
　＝It is foolish of him to meet her again.
彼女にまた会うなんて彼はばかだ。

It’s very kind of you to come.
来てくださってどうもありがとう。
（You are very kind to come. とは、あまり言わない）

It was careless of her to do that.
そんなことをするなんて彼女は不注意だった
（She was careless to do that. というと、直接とがめているような感じが強い）



形容詞のリストを挙げておくと、こんな感じ。

absurd, arrogant, big（＝kind）, bold, brave, careless, characteristic, cheeky, childish, clever, clumsy, considerate, courageous, cowardly, crazy, cruel, decent, disgraceful, disingenuous, fair, foolish, generous, good（＝kind）, great, gutless, honest, hypocritical, immoral, impolite, improper, impudent, irrational, irresponsible, kind, lazy, lovely, lucky, mean, naive, nasty, naughty, negligent, nice（＝kind）, nosy, perverse, polite, presumptuous, prudent, reasonable, responsible, ridiculous, right, rude, selfish, sensible, shameful, sharp, shrewd, silly, smart, stupid, sweet, thoughtful, thoughtless, typical, uncharacteristic, unfair, unkind, unprofessional, unwise, weak, wicked, wise, wonderful, wrong.

まあ、これ全部覚えても意味はない。
for 主語も of 主語も両方OKという形容詞もあるしね。

とりあえず、「バカ」系（absurd, foolish, naive, silly, stupid, thoughtless, unwise）とか、「親切」系（good, nice, kind）とか、よく知っている形容詞だけ、覚えておけばいい。

stupid の叙述的用法というもので、 it is stupid of + 代名詞（me、you、him、her、them）が入ると覚えてしまいましょう。

あなたにとって～することは…だ

It … for you to ～
この場合、意味の上での主語は、「～すること」です。

～するなんてあなたは…です
It … of you to ～
この場合の意味の上の主語は、「あなた」です。

つまり、「～すること」の性質や様子を伝えたい場合には「for」を、「あなた」の性質や様子を伝えたい場合には「of」を使えば良いと思います。
