anybody could take care of his wife ,they told him

anybody could take care of his wife ,they told him, but not anybody could be president of the college.
『誰にでも彼の妻の世話はできるが、誰もが大学の学長になれるわけではない、と彼らは言った。』

【状況)主人公は学長であったが、病気になってしまった妻の為に学長をやめようとした時の周りの人々のセリフ】

大体の訳のイメージはできるんですが、
何故　not anybodyの順番なんでしょうか？
(僕ならanybody could not〜の方がイイと思うですけど)

英語では、not any 〜 誰でもが〜できない、という言い方はしますが、any とnotの位置を逆にして

any not〜とは言わないからです。

｢･･･(彼以外の) 誰にでもこの大学の学長になれるわけではない、と･･･｣
"not anybody but he"「彼以外の誰も～ない」= "nobody but he could be president"

all, any, every, always等の前にnotを持ってくる場合には、部分否定となります。

全てが(どれも、全部が、いつも)～である訳ではない、～とは限らない
Not anybody~：誰もが～である訳でない

英語では「anybody could not」とは言わないからです。

つまり「but anybody could not be president of the college.」では意味を成しません。

"anybody could take care of his wife"に合わせて"not anybody could..."とした。
