head over heels

どうでもいい質問かもしれません。お付き合いいただける人だけ。

head over heels ですが、
これは「真っ逆さまに」ですよね。

でもこれなら「かかとの上に頭」ですから
真っ逆さまになっていないように思うのです。

He fell heels over head. なら
「彼は真っ逆さまに落ちた」になるような気がします。
これ、どう理解したらよいのでしょうか。

もともとは質問者さんのおっしゃるとおり、

heels over head だったそうです。
ある詩人がまちがって逆にして使い、
それが定着してしまった、そうです。

「新な/あらた」が正しいのに、
どこかでひっくりかえって、
「新しい/あたら」が定着したのと少し似ているかもしれませんが、
英語のほうは「音」ではなく、
意味のある単語がひっくりかえったままというのが
不思議です。

へえ、不思議ですねえ。

あらたとあたらしいは知っていますし、
さざんかとさんざかの例も知っていますが、
ここまでひっくり返るのは珍しいですね。

詩人がまちがったくらいで広まるのでしょうかね。
