「ザリガニの鳴くところ」の洋書

全世界で1200万部以上も売れたらしいアメリカの小説「ザリガニの鳴くところ」の洋書をアマゾンで売っています。私の英語の力は中級くらいかなと勝手に思っていますが、この本を実際に読まれ人にお聞きしたいんです。英語は難しいですか？　読みやすいですか？面白いですか？

全世界で１２００万部も売れたと言うだけあって文句なしに面白いです。

アメリカ東部の湿地帯に住む貧しい家庭に生まれた白人女性の一生の話で、恋愛小説でありナチュラリストの話でありまた推理小説の要素もあって最後のどんでん返しのような筋の展開も素晴らしく、本を読み終えた後には清々しさが残ります。

英文自体は比較的平易です。ただ我々外国人には馴染みの少ないアメリカの湿地帯に生きる鳥や魚や植物の名前が多く出てくるので読み始めの頃は辞書を引く回数が多いと思います。また会話をその発音通りに、例えば “I git lost all the time” (= I get lost all the time)　のように書いてあったりするのでこれも馴れるまでちょっと戸惑います。

だって、中学の授業で読んだ小説だって、いちいち辞書を引いて訳して行っただろ？

日本の中学レベルなんて、アメリカでは小学生低学年レベルだろ。

アマゾンなら Kindle で無料サンプルが読めますよ。

「Where the Crawdads Sing」。日本語翻訳も売っています。
サンプルは平易な文章ですから、読み易いと思います。こういう本を自力で読めば力がつくと思います。英文を、日本語訳と比べながらを読むのでもいいし。
