教えてください

For the first time green corn plants began to show--they pushed through the soil and could now be seen above the ground.
（最初にとうもろこしの緑の芽が見えてきました--土を突き抜けて顔をのぞかせた芽が、今では地面の上に見えるようになりました。）

上の文の「now」は副詞ですよね。この場合、副詞は助動詞の後ろでないとダメなんでしょうか？例えば上の文を now could be seen・・・としてはダメなんでしょうか？詳しく教えていただけるとありがたいです。よろしくお願いします。

副詞の位置は確かに定まりがない感じがしますしこの場合

and could now be seen → and now could be seen
としてもそれ程おかしいとは思いません。
それよりむしろ接続詞の and の方に注意してみると A and B では AとBは同じ品詞である方が分かりやすいですね。
He comes first and leaves last .( V+M and V'+M)
というような明確さのことです。この文は動詞対動詞
のような安定した構造を作者が選んだという事だと思います。
they pushed through the soil and now could be seen above the ground. 　 * S +（動詞1）and (副詞）+（動詞2）となります。
they pushed through the soil and could now be seen above the ground.　 * S +（動詞1）and（動詞2）+（副詞）です。
動詞対動詞のような構造の方が分かりやすいからだと思います。
正確には now（副詞）は（動詞2）に包含されてしまってますが・・。結局、shades さんと同じ事を言ってることになります。

書き直しです。
pushed through the soil　と
could now be seen above the ground
の両者は、中ほどにある主語theyに対応してるので
元の形は
they pushed through the soil （and）
they could now be seen above the ground.
だと思います。
ですので、
now could be seenにしてしまうと、論理的に言って後者は、
they now could be seen above the ground.になってしまうわけで
nowの位置に文法的整合性が合わないからではないでしょうか。

確かに副詞だからどこに位置してもいいような気がしますが、この場合、後半部の述語である

pushed through the soil　と
could now be seen above the ground
の両者は、中ほどにある主語theyに対応してるので
元の形
they pushed through the soil and
they now could be seen above the ground.では
nowの位置に文法的整合性が合わないからではないでしょうか。
