who were を省略して分詞構文にすると

James looked across at the two women, standing underneath the peach tree.
standing しているのは James か two women か少し曖昧になりそうな感じです。
コンマをなくすと
James looked across at the two women standing underneath the peach tree.
現在分詞の限定用法（前の名詞を修飾する）になって
standing してるのは two women と分かります。
不可能ではないにしろ主体が曖昧になるので原文の通りか現在分詞の限定用法でいった方が意味ははっきりすると思います。
