となると

Cはoutside the window だと思うのですが

文法的に

the outside window

ではないですか?

outside the window その窓の外に

the outside window その外側の窓
なので意味が違ってきます。

すみませんが日本で英語の文法を習っていないので文法はあまりわかりません。

そもそも、もしも outside the window ではなくて the outside window が正しいのだとしたら、(1) は

となってしまい、we を主語にして能動態に変えると

*(3) We left the edges of the membrane the outside window to hold in position.
となってしまい、わけがわからなくなりますし、もともとあなたがおっしゃっていた SVOC ではなくなります。

直訳っぽく訳しながら解釈してみると、次の通り。

(1) The edges of the membrane
膜の端部は、

(2) were left outside the window
その窓（ウィンドー）の外側に残されて、

(3) to hold it in position.
その結果としてそれ（ウィンドー）を固定した状態に保持することになった。
