Contemporary events differ from history in that we do not know the results they will produce. Looking back, we can assess the significance of past occurrences and trace the consequences they have brought in their train. But while history runs its course, it is not history to us. The
reason is that it leads us into an unknown land but rarely can we get a glimpse of what lies ahead. Things would be different if we were allowed to live a second time through the same events with all the knowledge of what we have seen before. If so, how different would things appear to us, how important and often alarming would changes seem that we now scarcely notice! It is therefore, probably fortunate that man can never have this experience and knows of no laws which history must obey.

（質問）trace the consequencesの意味が分かりません。「結果をたどる」という訳らしいですが、自分にはこれが何のことを表しているのかさっぱりです。どなたか説明をお願いいたします。

result (which) they(=contemporary events) will produce

「同時代的に起きている出来事が歴史と違っているのは、我々はその出来事によってもたらされる結果を知らないということだ。」

現在の時点で我々は過去の歴史、つまり、過去にある事件が起き、それによってある結果が生じた、という事を知っている。しかし、現在起きている出来事によって生じる結果を我々は知らない、という意味。

※looking back 分詞構文、「if we look back」
significance of A 「Aの重要性⇒Aがどれ程重要か」
trace the consequences (which they have brought) in their train.
train 連続
they,their = past occurrences
their train = they are in train.（それらは続いている。）

（歴史を）振り返ってみれば、我々は過去の出来事がどれ程重要だったかを評価することが出来るし、連綿なる歴史の中で、過去の出来事がもたらした結果をたどることが出来る。

歴史は、原因と結果がわかっている過去の話なので、過去の出来事が人類に与えた影響の多寡を評価できる。さらに、歴史はずっと連続しているので、過去に起きた出来事の後に生じた結果を知ることも出来る。traceは「たどる」だが、「調べる」ということ。例えば、我々は「大政奉還」という事件を知っているし、それによって「文明開化が訪れた」という結果もしっている、ということ。

trace the consequences (which) they have brought in their train のtheyはpast occurencesを指します。

in their train の theirも同じ。

直訳すると「過去の出来事がその後にもたらした結果をたどる」
