うまく表現できないのですが.....

”（人が斜め45度上方を見上げてるイメージで）彼の視線の先に見えるものは......””理想の自分だろうか....”　をうまく英語で表現したいのですが自分では直訳になってしまいます。

どなたかかっこよく英語にてアドバイス願いたいのですが、（カッコ内はただのイメージです。訳す必要はありません。）　よろしくお願い致します。

（1）ちょっと長ったらしいですが…

He is looking up at something beyond his sight and what he sees there might be the idealised vision of himself.

（2）少し簡潔にしてみました。
What he is trying to see beyond his sight might be his ideal self.

（3）雰囲気を変えてみました。
He is looking up at something ... Something beyond his sight. Is he trying to see his ideal self?

時制については過去形にするなり適当に変えても良いでしょう。

少し意味が変わってしまいますが，動詞をlook for にして意志的なものを強調してみました。余韻を残したのは原文どおり。
挿し絵に添えるイメージで作っています。

「直訳になってしまいます」との事ですので直訳ではありません。
