「何の3分の1？」の英訳

英訳のご相談です。

相手が話の中で「3分の1」と言った時、何の3分の1か分からなくて尋ねた、という状況を英語で描写します。
直接話法ならI asked "One third of what?" でいいかも知れませんが、これを間接話法でquotation markを使わずに "I asked..."で始めたい場合（「私はそれが何の3分の1か尋ねた」）、どういう表現になりますか？　考えたのは"I asked him what one third he meant."とか"I asked what one third it was." ですが、「それが何の1/3か」のところが不自然な気がします。

自信のある方、よろしくお願いします。

『... と、"of" を抜かさないようにしましょう』

... に関しては、文法書などの "疑問詞" または "疑問文" の項目を確認してください。

『"regarding" を用いた方が、より自然な英語だと思います』

... に関しては、難しいですね。。。
アメリカに 10 年以上住んでいて、

"Regarding what one third?"

... は何回か聞いたことがあるのに対して、

"Of what one third?"
"What one third of?"

... は１回も聞いたことがない、私の "経験" からの回答ですから。。。^^;

"regarding" の意味は "on the subject of" です。
日本語では "～に関して" ですが、逐語的に訳せば 『～という議論などの主題に関して』 ... くらいになるでしょうか。。。

"Regarding what one third?"
* 何に関しての "3分の1" なの？

... の意味です。

"One third of what?"

... もよく聞く表現ですが、正しい "疑問文" ではないので、"間接話法" にする場合は正しい語順にすべきです。
ただ、文法書によれば "of what..." でいいはずですが、実際には聞かない表現です。

"確認できるソース" は残念ですが、私は知りません。

しかし、結局ネイティブに訪ねてみたところ、

○ I asked him what one third he meant. (of は不要）
○ I asked him what one third he was referring to.
○ I asked him what he meant by "one third."
× I asked him regarding what one third it was.

との事でした。

"grammatically" には、

"I asked him of what one third."
"I asked him of what one third he meant."
"I asked him of what one third it was."

... と、"of" を抜かさないようにしましょう。
ただ、"regarding" を用いた方が、より自然な英語だと思います。

"I asked him regarding what one third."
"I asked him regarding what one third he meant."
"I asked him regarding what one third it was."

参考書か何か、確認できるソースはありますか？
それから、私が質問したのは2分の1ではなくて3分の1です。
文法的には同じかも知れませんが、わざわざ変えられたのには何か意味があるのでしょうか？
