No students came to school that day.
No student in the class could answer the questions.

no=not a, not any

We had to walk because there was no bus. (=there wasn't a bus)
I cn't talk to you now. I have no time. (=I don't have any time.)
There were no shops open. (=there weren't any shops)

no time, no shops

There were no buses at this time of the day.

No students came to school that day.
=Not any students came to school that day.

No student in the class could answer the questions.
=Not a student could answser the questions.

No student came....

No students came ....
No student in the class could....
No students in the class could....
