和訳をお願いします！

ニンニクについての英文です。
自分で訳してはみたのですが、うまくできなくて困っています。
和訳・添削お願いします！

【本文】
Garlic was a respected medication and charm from Roman times all through the Middle Ages.
The Roman Pliny claimed that sixty-one ailments could be cured with garlic.
Medieval doctors, visiting the sick, brought along a few cloves of garlic to serve as a combined charm and disinfectant.
In early England anxious parents inserted cloves of garlic into the stockings of any child suffering from whooping cough.
Not only was garlic an unusually effective charm against the wicked deeds of witches but, on the positive side, everyone who purchased garlic on St. John's Day believed that he would be safe from poverty during the coming year.

【自分の訳】
ガーリックは、古代ローマから中世を通して薬剤やお守りとして評判が高かった。
古代ローマのプリニウスは、６１の病気をガーリックで治療することができると主張した。
中世の医者は、病人を訪ね、お守りと殺菌剤を組み合わせた、ガーリックの一片を持っていった。
イギリスでは早くから、百日咳で苦しむ子供に、心配している両親が子供の靴下にガーリックの一片を差し込んだ。
ガーリックは魔女のいやな行為に対して非常に効果的なお守りであるだけでなく、良い面として、セント・ジョンズ・デーにガーリックを買った全ての人が、次の年の間中、貧困から守られると信じられていた。


１、２文目はおそらくこの訳でも大丈夫だと思うのですが、３～５文目がうまく訳せません。
ぜひ添削お願いします。

「中世の医者は、病人を訪れる際にはニンニクを２，３片持っていき、お守りと殺菌剤を兼ねたものとして用いた」
visiting the sick = when they visited the sick　と考えるといいと思います。

In early England anxious parents inserted cloves of garlic into the stockings of any child suffering from whooping cough.
「昔のイングランドでは、百日咳に苦しむ我が子が心配でたまらない親が、子供の靴下にニンニク片を差し込んだ」
cloves と複数形になってるので、「一片」とは書かない方がよろしいかと思います。

Not only was garlic an unusually effective charm against the wicked deeds of witches but, on the positive side, everyone who purchased garlic on St. John's Day believed that he would be safe from poverty during the coming year.
the wicked deeds of witches は「魔女のいやな行為」というよりも「魔女のしでかす悪さ」くらいの方がいいかもしれません。「いやな行為」ではちょっと弱い気がしますので。
on the positive side,　ですが、「良い面として」としてしまうと、前半部分は悪い面を述べているかのようですので（魔女の行為は悪いのですが、それに対して効果絶大といってるのですからいい話ですよね）、そのまま「ポジティブな面として」とでもしてはいかがでしょう。
