the person と a person

辞書で２つの語の定義を見てみました。辞書は　Cambridge Dictionary Online　です。

・stationmaster
　　　　　the person who is in charge of a railway station

・mayor
　　　　　a person who is elected or chosen to be the leader of the group who governs a town or city

stationmaster　では　the person　・・・　と説明されています。
mayor　では　a person　・・・　となっています。

質問です。

（1）the person　、　a person　と使い分けてあるのはなぜでしょうか。

（2）mayor　の定義を

someone who is elected or chosen to be the leader of the group who governs a town or city

としたら間違いになるのでしょうか。

補足します。

mayor の定義は a person→is chosen→the leaderの流れで選ばれる人の意味で不特定になっていると思います。つまり one of the people の意味の a person ではないでしょうか。

1 the person の the は

a railway station に対する限定の the です。つまり（ある）駅を担当している（特定または唯一の）人ということで駅は任意でa を用いて、その駅の責任者（限定）にtheを用いています。mayorの定義の表現を利用して言い換えるとthe leader of a railway station の the とおなじです。
mayor の定義は特に限定されてないので a person です。限定されているのは
the leader でこれは who governs a town or cityで限定されています。
（もちろん town は a）

2 someone でも同じです。Longman には mayor＝someone who is chosen or elected to represent a town or city とあります。

４つの英英辞書の例ですが、ほとんど"the"がついています。何かの拍子に"a"になったのではないでしょうか。たった一人しかいない役職はやはり"the"をつけると日本人は覚えておいた方がいいと思います。

回答ありがとうございました。いくつかの辞書の定義を紹介して頂きましたがそれを読んだとき、

a　～　としたときと、the　～　としたときでは、その役職を見るときの距離感に違いがあるように感じました（theとしたときのほうが近くから見ている感じ）。
