中国と日本は長い間尖閣諸島の事で争っていますが、周辺の地下資源と漁業領域がなければ、両国ともあの島なんてどうでもいいはずです。
仮に地下資源と漁業領域はいらないから尖閣諸島をくれと言われれば、日本政府は喜んで差し出すでしょうし、実際中国もそれで尖閣諸島なんかはいらないはずです。
つまり、「その周辺の地下資源と漁業領域は我々のものだ」という争いを国同士で自国民を煽って争っているにすぎないのです。

China and Japan have a long-running dispute over the Senkaku islands, but if not for the nearby natural resources and fishing areas neither country would be likely to concern itself with such a place.

Without the desire for its natural resources, the Japanese government would probably be delighted to give Senkaku away, and China also would probably not want it.
Basically, the claim that "those resources and fishing areas belong to us" does nothing more than stir up each countries' citizens.
