part も portion も「部分、一部」と訳されますが、実際の用法の中での違いなどあるのでしょうか。ご存知の方がおられましたら宜しくご教示の程お願いいたします。

No.1の方の「どちらかがわからなければより一般的なpartを使う方が無難」に同感、私自身も納得です。

参考までに、手許のWebster's New Dictionary of Synonymsを調べました。Partの項で、次のように解説しています。

Part, portion, detail, ... ... ..., parcel are comparable when they mean something which is less than the whole but which actually is or is considered as if apart from the rest of the whole.

Part, portion, detail, ... ... ..., parcel等は、全体よりも小さく、全体から離れているか離れているとみなされるものを意味するとき、類似の意味を持つ。

Part is the most comprehensive of these terms; it may be used in place of any of succeeding words in this group or even in place of such words as element, component, or constituent.

Partは最も包括的であり、これらの語（前記のportion, detailなどを指します）あるいはelement, component, constituent等の代わりに使ってよい。

Portion, although it denotes a part of whole, does not always presuppose a compact or integral whole; it may suggest a whole that comprises all of an existing or a possible stock or store without any connotation of its assemblage.

この二つの違いについてはいくつかのusageで示されています。

1.Garner's modern American Usage
Portion→ generally means “share,” or “an entity cut (or as if cut) away from the whole.”
portionは一般的に「割り当て」もしくは「全体から切り離した独立した部分」
Part→ means “a constituent piece of the whole.”
Partは、「全体を構成する一部」

2.Longman Guide to English Usage
Portion→ a share, such as a helping of food, allotted to someone.
Portionは、割り当てのこと、例えば誰かに食事を分担したなど
Part→a limited quantity taken from a whole, and this is the more general word
Partは全体からの限られた一部の量のこと

基本的には法律、規則、法令また、なにかの事例や問題などの一部と言いたい時には、portionは使いません。こういった場合はpartのみです。

あとは、自分が使いたい事柄が、(1)や(2)のように全体から完全に切り離された一部（Portion）なのか、それとも全体を構成する一部（Part)なのかによって使い分けることになります。どちらかがわからなければより一般的なpartを使う方が無難だと考えます。
