この英語の原文はなんでしょうか。

「演劇の発生」に関する本でしょうか。そういう印象を受けましたので、日本語として読みやすいように「意訳」します。

もしかしたら「儀式」が物語りや神話を作り出すのかもしれない。
神話には、超自然的な力が、喜びや希望を表すために祭礼を行うことが繰り返し繰り返し登場する。
元々、祭礼の参加者たちは、時に衣装や被り物などで「神話上の人物」や「超自然的な何か」を表そうと試みていた。
しかし、人間が知識を得るに従って、因果関係を理解するようになり、超自然的な力と距離を置くようになる。
そのため、いずれ時代に合わない因習を捨て去ったり、時代に合うように変革したりするようになっていく。

このような現象は、集団の中に生まれた神話と儀式を、因習や伝統として生き残らせ、また儀式としての形式は、集団の因習から離れても伝統芸能として生き残るかもしれない。

これらの動きは、演劇の発生と自立的な進歩を促し、その娯楽性と土俗性はいずれ、その社会における神秘性や美的価値観の基礎へと変化していく。
