You were away then.（＝at the time）

文法的には大丈夫です。

でも、“during the time when you were away”のところは、whenではなくthatを使って"during the time that you were away"のように言うか、あるいはwhenを省略してしまって“during the time you were away”とするほうが普通です。

“time when”と「時間・時期」の意味の言葉を重複させるのが、何となく余計でダブった感じになるからだと思います。
