以下のサッカーの記事で、
最後の
top beneath
と
by the rash on their chest
の意味がわかりません。
教えていただけると助かります。
よろしくお願いいたします。

ちなみにSteinはスコットランドのセルティック
というチームの伝説的監督、
McNeillとはセルティックでキャプテンを務めていた選手の名前です。

top beneath については、"a normal Celtic top"（名詞） + "beneath"（副詞）で、「下の（中に着ている） Celtic のいつもの上衣」ぐらいの意味で使われていると思います。

by the rash on their chest については、そのまま、「彼らの胸の発疹によって」だと思います。

ということで訳としては、おおよそ：

> They donned heavy, hairy jerseys and the privilege for the first team lay in entitlement to a normal Celtic top beneath.

彼らは厚手の毛のジャージを着込んでいたのだが、一軍の特権というのは、その下に Celtic のいつもの（ユニフォームの）上衣を着ることができるというところにあった。

> According to McNeill, you could always tell a reserve by the rash on their chest.

McNeill によると、胸が赤くなっているのを見れば彼らが控え選手であることがわかったというわけだ。

ところで、自分の考えた訳をつけないこのような質問は管理者に削除されてしまうようです。回答があまりないのは、そのせいではないでしょうか。

自分の訳をつけなくてすいませんでした。
（ただ全くわからなかったもので）。
あれから自分でも調べてみたのですが、
rashとはスコティッシュイングリッシュでrushのこと、
つまりイグサを意味し、
セルティックのチームシンボルを表すのではないかと思い始めています。
top beneathはやはりNo.1さんがおっしゃる通り、
ビブスのようなもので、訳としては、
「1軍の選手は、セルティックのビブスをつけることが許されていた。マクニールによると、胸のイグサのマークによって、1軍と2軍の区別がついた」
という感じになるのではと考えております。
