日本語の助詞の「や」のニュアンスを英語で表現すると

日本語の並列助詞に「や」というのがありますよね。
例えば「犬“や”猫は身近な動物として多くの家庭で飼われている。」という文の場合の“や”の用法です。
和英辞典で調べると andとorの両方の訳語が載っていますが、この日本語の「や」が示す andをorの中間のようなニュアンスは英語で表せるでしょうか？

日本語の「や」という助詞は非常に便利な言葉ですね。

ucokさんが回答で「andやor」と言うように使っていますね。(よりによって andとorの中間的な意味である「や」で結ぶのが笑えますが。）しかし、学校の英語の英文和訳ではほとんど出てこないはずですし、英作文の題材でも
比較的避け、出てきたとしても 日本語では「と」と「または」のどっちかに言い換えてから作文する形になりますからね。それだけに、これも見過ごされがちな問題ですね。それでは、日本語の「や」を英語で説明してみます。

The particle や has various meanings, among which there is one of the juxtaposition. It's a very pratical word but it contains a subtle feature. It juxtaposes two or more than two nouns and expresses both the connection and the alternative. But this connection is less tight than AND, that is to say, it doesn't require that the juxtaposed items are present together. In the other hand, this alternative is less rigid than OR, that is to say, it often admits a certain compatibility of several choices.
If you mean “Dogs and cats are kept in many families as popular animals” in Japanese, you can get “犬と猫は多くの家庭で身近な動物として飼われている。” Of course you can replace 犬と猫 by 犬や猫, (which is usually rather prefered). But there is a slight difference between 犬と猫 and 犬や猫. In this case, や would render somewhat like “either...or...”
And if you say “犬や猫を飼っている人は多い” , it means that there are many people who keep a dog(dogs), as well as those who keep a cat(cats), and also those who keep even both of them. It goes without saying that this sentense is so prolix.. Alors a vous de rendre cette phrase concise., d'accord?

その「中間の」単語っていうのは、ちょっと思い浮かばないのですが、andやorでいいんですよ。

逆に考えて、英文和訳をする場合、確かに、andやorを「と／または」と訳すか「や」と訳すか迷う場面が皆無かというとそうではないのですが、たいていの場合は、「どう考えても『や』だよね」と、文脈からわかります。どうしてもハッキリさせたい場合は、(cats and dogs) and the like（「のようなものなど」という意味）とするという手がありますが、かえってくどくなるような気がします。
