えーと、まず質問者さんがお挙げになったこの文ですが

これはaddressed の後ろにthatが省略されたと考えて、what he said were distortions of his remarks by "some media," この部分全体が名詞節になってaddressed の目的語になっているのではないでしょうか。
これで前の文との意味はつながりますか？

で問題の文ですが、いまいろいろな文を検索しまくって眺めていたら、ふっとこんなことが頭に浮かびました。
＞　Mr. Obama criticized frequently during the debate for what he said were distortions of his views and record by the former president.
挿入と考えるならば、he said だけじゃなくてwhat he said were の部分が挿入ではないだろうか。とすると、forの目的語はdistortions となって、意味も通じます。
what he said were は全体で「彼（オバマ）いわく」
もっと詳しく訳すると「彼（オバマ）が言うことはwere以下ですが」

what they call で「いわゆる」という意味の熟語がありますが、これと同じ感じでさらにもう一段階増やした熟語相当の言い回しかもしれません。
"what he said were" で検索してどっと出てきた例文をざっと眺めたら、こうとらえて問題なさそうな気がしてきました。

これはどうもオバマが

"What he said were distortions of my views and record by the former president"
といったのでしょう。複数のメディアが同じ文を載せていますから。
したがって、この件は、私の解釈が間違ってました。またもや失礼しました。
最初はちょっと迷ったのですが、結局
what were alleged to be distortions
と捕らえました。
しかし、What he/she said were ときたら、解釈は tjhiroko さんの法が正しいですね。

＃２ですが、＃３さんがお書きのように確かにfor の後は名詞が本来かと思いますが、これを読んだとき私は特別「ん？」とはならずに、forの後ろ全体をひとかたまりのものとしてとらえてしまってました。

こういう使い方はないものかと思って検索してみたのですが（検索バカですみません）

例えばこれらの文もすべて同じ形ではないでしょうか。
＞Standing on the steps of the state Capitol, Republicans criticized Democrats for what they said was stalling.

＞Obama criticized Bush for what he said was a lack of urgency in rebuilding the city.

文法的には分かりませんが、これらの文を訳せと言われたら＃２でやったのと同じようにやってしまいます。違うのでしょうか。

for 以下は名詞でなくてはならないと思います。

したがって he = Clinton なら
Mr. Obama criticized Bill Clinton, saying what he(Clinton) said were distortions of Obama's views by Clinton.
とならないと駄目でしょう。
for 以下は名詞なので
iamgreen さんの文は下記のように書き換えられるでしょう。
for the things which ,Mr Obama said, were distortions of Obama's views by Clinton.
he = Clinton なら for いかが完全な文になってしまいおかしくなります。

この形は、
He is the man who I think is clever.
などの I think の挿入とおなじで
Who is clever と断定しないで表現する方法で、

この文を見ただけでの回答ですが、what he said のheはクリントン元大統領ではないですか。

Mr.Obama criticized Bill Clinton for what he said were distortions of his views and record by the former president.
オバマ氏は、彼（クリントン）の言ってることは元大統領によるオバマ氏の意見や業績の曲解だ、とビル・クリントンを批判した。

ということで、その辺のおじさんが曲解してもどうってことないですが、元大統領という立場の人の発言ですので重みが違いますからね、そこでこういう形の文（つまり途中ではheで受けていながら、最後にはby him とせずにby the former president にした）になったかと思います。

そのとおりですね。

he said は挿入的にObama said です。
were 出ないといけません。
Distortions of ... by ... の解釈はあってると思います。
