There are different types of a food chain. In a sequence in which plants are eaten by herbivorous animals (grazers),which in turn are eaten by carnivorous predators, the chain may be called a grazing food chain. There is also a detritus food chain, in which dead plants are consumed by decomposers. In a well-developed ecosystem, such as a forest , more than 90 percent of primary production is eventually consumed by the organisms in the detritus chain ; less than 10 percent is consumed in the grazing chain.

さまざまな種類の食物連鎖があります。

植物が草食動物に食べられ、次に草食動物は捕食性の肉食動物に食べられるという順番をたどる食物連鎖を生食連鎖と呼びます。また腐食連鎖というのもあります。死んだ植物が分解者によって消化される過程です。成熟した生態系（例えば森）では、90％以上の一次生産物は、腐食連鎖を構成する生物によって最終的に消化されます。生食連鎖で消化されるものは10％より少ないのです。
