お見合いとは、世話人と呼ばれる第三者の仲介によって、結婚を希望する男女が対面することである。世話人はふつう、親類縁者、近所の人、知人、友人、職場の先輩、仕事の取引先など結婚希望の男女に関わりある人物がなります。お見合いは第一に釣書と呼ばれる写真付きのプロフィールを作って、世話人に渡す。第二に世話人は自分が預かっている釣書の中から、あるいは別の世話人と釣書を交換するなどして、釣り合いの取れそうな相手を見つける。第三に世話人は適切と思われる相手が見つかったら、世話人は相手の釣書を男女双方に提示する。第四にお互いが合うことを希望したら、世話人立会いの下で対面させる。このとき世話人に手数料を支払う。第五に双方が再度会いたいという意思表示をした場合は、交際に入る。そうでないときは、男女が再会することは決してない。最後に結婚が成立した場合は、世話人に謝礼を払う

d “Sewanin” for man and woman who are seeking marriage. Typically, “Sewanin”is an individual who has the connections or references with marriage seekers, such as a family relative, a neighbor, a close friend, a co-worker, or the client. The pre-arranged meeting is processed through five steps. First, the applicants make their profiles with their photos and hand them to “Sewanin.”Then, Sewanin”begins to work on match-making process by reviewing applicants’ profiles and/or trading the profiles with other inter-mediator(s) to find a perfect match. Third, after identifying a partner for match-making, “Sewanin” will notify each marriage seeker and ask if they would meet together for an appointment. Fourth, if both marriage seekers agree to meet each other, they will pay “Sewanin” the fees for such arrangement. Marriage seekers will engage in a relationship if they decide to see each other after a pre-arranged meeting. Otherwise, they will never see again. Finally, if a couple gets married, they will pay “Sewanin” the deposits for providing a successful match-making opportunity.

The miai(or omiai) is a formal meeting with a view to marriage for men and women who want to get chances to be maeeied through the intermediation of a sewanin(a marrige agent). Sewanins are normally people who have concerns with the man and the woman, who want marrige opportunities, like their relatives, neghbors, friends, elder colleagues, business acquaintances and so on. A miai starts with handing a sewanin a tsurigaki, which has photos and introductions of the man or woman. Secondary, the sewanin choose proper person for the man or woman, from tsurigakis which the sewanin already has got or other sewanins have. Thirdly, if the sewanin finds a proper partner, sewanin shows his tsurigaki to her and her tsurigaki to him. Forthly, if those two agree to meet each other, they pay some to the sewanin and meet together with the sewanin. If they both want to meet again, their association for the marriage starts. If not, they won't meet again. And if they marry, they pay a reward to the sewanin.
