それぞれ異なる話題についての英文です。どちらも文としてはあまり難しくは無いと思うのですが、話題の内容が上手く掴めませんでした。どちらかと言うと後半の英文です。お願いします。

People in mind climates in the northern hemisphere sometimes experience periods of very hot and humid weather. These periods, which occur in July, August, and early September, are called “dog days” in English. This expression comes from Latin, the language used by the ancient Romans. They believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, which rises with the sun during this time, added its heat to the sun's and caused the hot weather.

All modern scientists believe that there is an older to the universe. But the ancient Sumerians, who lived in what is today Iraq, didn't believe in an ordered universe. They believed the universe was ruled by dogs, who did whatever they wanted to do without any reason. The Sumerians probably believed this because unpredictable natural changes occurred in their land, such as floods, that they couldn't control.
