ただし、what は関係代名詞です。

what it(=my hometown) was ten years ago 10年前のわたしの故郷

という意味です。受験でよく聞かれます。「それが10年前にあったところのもの」というのが直訳で、「10年前のわたしの故郷」という意訳になります。

ですから

「今日のわたし」は、what I am today
「昔の彼」は、what he used to be

となります。これらもよく問われます。
