摩擦は有用です。

例えばベルトによる（動力の）伝導はスリップを防ぐ摩擦に依存しています。一方摩擦は機械の内部で動力の消耗を招きます。技術者は摩擦係数の少ない材料例えばベアリングなどを用いるた良い設計によりできるだけ摩擦を低減しようと努力します。

我々が知っていることは全てをあわせてもたかだか約１００個ほどの異なるタイプの原子が存在しているに過ぎないということである。原子は化学反応によっては破壊されたり変化させられたりすることはない。つまりただ起こりうることの全ては原子の配列が変わり、その結果他の異なる性質を持つ科学的な物質を作り出すだけである。

（自然の）水の循環において乾燥している地域の役割は降った雨や池状になった地表の水を地下水として供給するあるいは一時的に植物が利用できるように地表面近くに蓄えて置くことである。水の乾燥地域における移動のプロセスは自然石物質を溶かすことかもしれないし、あるいは地表や地表の近くに適用された人工的な農薬などを運ぶことかもしれません。
