結局、ソビエト軍の侵攻によって救出の手が届かなくなってしまったその移動は中止する以外に選択肢は無くなってしまった。

ドイツ社会主義統一党の総辞職、ウルブリヒト第一書記の解任、自由選挙および東西ドイツの併合、こうした政治的な要求はたちまち高まっていった。

ロシア軍の戦車は、ベルリンや東ドイツのほかの大きな町々で怒りに燃えた群衆をなぎ倒していった。

それによって命を落とした者の数は何ダースとか数百人とかの程度にいろいろ言われている。

そしてさらに1,000人以上もの一般市民が長期に及ぶ監禁を強いられることになった。
