記事（文字）では

でしたが、このMP3（音声）を聞くと

でした。

agoとbeforeの違いは問題集レベルでは知っています。
どうして用語の使い分けをするのでしょうか。

あと、fellもfellsになるべきかと思うのですが...

last year の、さらに、「その前年」ですので、before が正しいです。

文字の方はちょっとした勘違いか誤植。
しょせん、あらゆる文字になったものが、人の手で打ったか、スキャナで読み取ったか、
いずれにせよ、最終的に人間の眼で校正する際に見落とせば誤りとなります。

the number of ～は単数扱いではありますが、
fell は過去形なので、-s がつく余地はありません。

英語ネイティブの人でも、「a year before」と言う誤用をする人が時々います。

　特にインド人は「a year before」と言う人が多いですね。　fellはfallの「過去形」ゆえ、sは付きません。　「昨年自殺件数が21,897に”なった”」と言う意味ですね。

fellはfallの過去分詞なのでsは付かない。
