ある英語テキストに　The Tigers closed within two points in the closing minute.の訳が「タイガースが最後の最後に2点を入れて終了」でした。どうしてこの訳になるのかわかりません。イディオムなのでしょうか？いいテキストなのですが、この文だけよくわかりません。

文脈にもよるのでしょうが、「最後の最後に2点を入れて終了」という訳がちょっと無理な感じです。

いくつか例をあげてみます。
Notre Dame (2-5) had closed within two points in the third period but never overtook Sikeston (4-3).
