英語の疑問 生物系の英語の名詞の単数複数について教えてください。

BBCにあった生物関係の英語の音声のスクリプトです。
後半の［　］のcellは単数ですが、その前では複数になっています（違いは定冠詞の有無のみです）。どうして単数になっているのでしょうか。辞書からは複数の方がよい感じもしますが、... 音声の方もこの個所は単数で発声されています。

ここでの cell の単複は　私たちに共通の　in our bodies に対して

cells と複数で対となっています。　一方　具体的に in your body(読者）の　the ～ cell（単数）対応させています。ただしいずれも　different kinds of なので複数の種類の細胞を指しています

回答ありがとうございます。bodyにも単複について、googleでみますとヒット数は、以下のようで、非英語圏の情報もあり頻度数で推論するにはリスクがあるとは思いますが、bodyが単数の場合もcellは複数の傾向があるように思えます。追加質問となりますが、your bodyに対しcellsとすると、cellの場合とどのような違いがあるのでしょうか。

a kind of book のように，a kind of の後は可算名詞でも a がつきません。

these kinds of ～と kind が複数になると，
these kinds of books
these kinds of book
の二通りの書き方があります。

漠然と「さまざまな種類の」という場合は
different kinds of ～です。
中略の直後はこのパターンです。
最後に，the different kinds of cell となっているのは，
M, R, S, G, R, E, N の 7 種類と限定されているからです。

複数種類ある以上，cells と複数にしてもよいわけですが，cell にしているのは，「一つ一つの種類」という気持ちが強いからだと思います。

a cell で細胞一つしか表さないわけですので，実際の体の描写としては
red blood cells のように（一つの種類であっても）複数の cells になります。
しかし，「○○細胞」と種類を言う場合は
a red blood cell とか，a nerve cell と言うことができ，
最後も 7 種類の各細胞という意味で単数形 cell になっているのだと思います。

質問者さんは人細胞に関して詳しい方と思いますが・・・

最初の・・・（中略）・・・の二つのパラグラフに出てくる“CELLS” と上記の文中の［cell］ との意味が同じCELLでも少し異なるのです。

最初に出てくるCELLS普通の人細胞全体を意味しています。
しかし［cell］ とブラケットつきで単数で強調して書いてある意味は、CELL STRUCTURE で細胞内の構造のことを言ってます。

何故ならば、上記の英文を訳しますと

「人間の体中の異なった種類の［cell］の働きを覚える為には、Mrs. Gren と言う単語をを記憶することです。Mrs. GrenはM, R, S, G, R, E, N,の７個のアルファベット言葉にしたものです。それらの文字は（M）運動、（R）メタボリズム　（S）感覚（G） 成長（R） 再生（E） 排泄　（N）栄養の摂取を意味します。」

以上の化学作用は細胞内で行われています。

例えば、

Reproduction - DNA - Mytocys or Meiocys cell replication

Sensitivity - Protein - Receptor Protein recognizes the surroundings of the cell

Respiration - Mytochodria - through the process of metabolism

Excretion - Contractile Vacuole - Pumping out the excretes...

等です。即ちDNA/PROTEIN/MYTOCHONDRIA/CONTRACTILE VACUOLEは細胞内に存在します。

従って、最後の文では一応細胞に関係があるので［cell］の単数形で使用してCELLSとの違いを意味していると思います。

Oxford大学出版のPractical Englsh Usageによると

sort of, type of & kind of の使い方は同じで、

１）kind of cell （Formal)
　　kind of a cell (Informal)
kind of cells (Informal)
で、全て、間違った使用法ではないとしています。

2) kinds of cell
kinds of cells
はどちらもformalで正しい使用法としています。
とすると、どちらを使っても文法的に正しく意味も変わらないことだと思います。

これ等の文法から、推測しますと、生物系の文章での使い方では違いではなく、一般的な英文法の解釈とおもいます。

上記文は
kinds of cells
若しくは
kinds of cell
と統一した書き方でも正しく
cellとcellsを入れ替えても構わない。

この文章を書いた人の頭の中にはcellの部分を上記のように統一した使用法ではなく”通常の単数名詞と複数名詞”の使い方と同様に使い分けて使用しているだけと思います。

少し舌足らずだったかもしれません。
文法書によると
Those kinds of car(s) are ・・・
は同じ意味で両者ともformalな言い回しで正しい。
文中では、一般的に
different kinds of cell(s)
はcellを単数扱いにするか、cellsと複数扱いで使用するのが一般的であるが、個人の文章に対する感覚や選択でkinds of cell（s）を使い分けてもかまわない。
different kinds of cell = A cell of different kind
different kinds of cells = Cells of different kind
として、個人的に明確に区別をした使い方も文法的に許されます。というのもdifferent kins of cell(s)はどちらも文法的にformalで正しく意味も同じ、もし文中で統一せずにmixをした使い方であれば当然上記のようなすみ分けをしないと読者は戸惑うはず・・・

上記文の作者のkinds ofの文法的捉え方を上記の様に規則正しく分けた文法を使っているだけだと思います。
とすると、
Different kinds of cells in our bodies do different jobs
↓
Cells of different kind in our bodies do different jobs
を示唆し

help you remember the different kinds of cell in your body
↓
help you remember a cell of different kind in your body
