酸化を英語で説明

化学にはまったく疎いので、教えてください。
学生の頃に化学の時間で習ったので、日本語ではなんとなく説明できる（これもあやしい）のですが、英語だとどうなりますか。

酸化(oxidation)は酸素と化学反応(chemical reaction)する現象で、「錆びる」もそうですが、瞬間的に反応が進むと「燃える」とか「爆発する」とかになる…、と思っているのですが。正しいですか？

これは酸化の狭義的な定義ですね．腐食corrosionなどもこれに含まれます．日常的には，瞬時に起こる酸化反応を「燃焼」として認識していますが，厳密な定義に「瞬時」というのはなかったような気がしたので，慣用的なイメージでしょうね．

酸素と化合物を作る反応を酸化反応といいます．
広義的には，「電子を与える反応」を酸化反応といい，ひいては「酸化数が増加する反応」を酸化反応というわけです．


アメリカの高校化学テキストより抜粋しておきます（一部編集しました）．

「酸化の狭義」
Oxidation originally meant the combination of an element with oxygen to give oxides.
For example, when iron slowly turns to rust, it oxidizes to iron oxide(Fe2O3).
Thus, the chemical changes like these are known as oxidation reactions.

「酸化の実例」
Oxidation reactions are the principal source of energy on earth.
The combustion of gasoline in an automobile engine and the burning of wood in a fireplace are oxidation reactions.
So is the "burning" of food by our bodies.

「酸化の広義」
Chemists have extended the concepts of oxidation and redution to include all transfers or shift of electrons.
The advantage of the new definition is that it has much wider application than the old.
Hence oxidation is complete or partial loss of electrons or gain of oxygen.
Redution is complete or partial gain of electrons or loss of oxygen.

ちなみに，広義的な酸化反応を応用すれば，
Fe + H2S → FeS + H2
といった，酸素のかかわらない反応も，酸化反応といえます．

認識としては正しいと思います。

化学反応というより「化合」(combination)といった方がより正確かも。
あと、あたりまえですが、すべての爆発現象が酸化によるものではありません。

Oxidization is combination of oxygen.
Rusting is a kind of oxidization.
The rapid oxidization with heat is called "combustion".

といった感じですかね。英文にはちょっと自信ありませんが…。
