Man has existed for about a million years. He has possessed writing for about 6,000 years, agriculture somewhat longer, but perhaps not much longer Science, as a dominant factor in determining the beliefs of educated men, has existed for about 300 years; as a source of economic technique, for about 150 years. [In this brief period it has proved itself an incredibly powerful revolutionary force.
When we consider how recently it has risen to power, we find ourselves forced to believe that we are at the very beginning of its work in transforming human life. What its future effects will be is a matter of conjecture, but possibly a study of its effects hitherto may make the conjecture a little less risky.]

　の部分を指していると思われます。つまり、「科学は、教養ある人の資格を決定付ける、大きな要素として、およそ300年間存在してきた。また、経済手法の源流としてはおよそ150年だ。」を「この短い間に」と換言して指します。

　次に、it has proved itself an incredibly powerful revolutionary force. の it は、Science　です。つまり「科学は、驚くほど、強力で革命的な力であることを、自身で証明したのである。」

　その後の

　When we consider how recently it has risen to power, we find ourselves forced to believe that we are at the very beginning of its work in transforming human life.
　
　における it もずっと、Science です。

　NO 2 です。

　how recently it has risen to power　の訳がおかしかったので、訂正します。

「近年どれほど、影響力を及ぼしてきたか」

→「科学の影響がいかに最近になって、大きな力となってきたか」です。つまり How recently の解釈が変でした。
