themselves の指す内容

Crested Weed Fish:

These fish spend most of their time hiding under stones or among weeds, and they are the same color as weeds themselves.

これは図鑑からです。　themselves の指す内容がわかりません。The fish なのか、weeds なのか？

この英文は、
they are the same color as weeds (are )themselves
と(are)が省略されていると思います。
これで、再帰代名詞の主語と一致するかと考えます。
英語の専門家ではないので自信はありません。参考までに。

they are the same color as weeds themselves.魚は海草そのものと同じ色である（保護色なのでしょうね）。

ですから、weedsをさします。
