この except を前置詞として解釈するのは不可能です。
「木村さん以外は、科学者ではない。」
などという解釈は文法的に、構文的に不可能です。もしそういう和文に適した英文が書きたいなら、次のように書かないといけなくなります。

Except Ms Kimura, no one is a scientist.
No one is a scientist, except for Ms. Kimura.

①の前置詞だと、「木村夫人以外は、科学者ではない（木村夫人だけは科学者）」
②の接続詞だと、「木村夫人が科学者でないというだけでなく（他の誰も科学者でない）」

比べて見てください。「Except (that) Ms Kimura is not a scientist」と考えてもよいでしょう。

おそらく質問者さんが躓いているところは、Except の意味合いでしょう。
