wouldの訳し方

下記の英文、

At every station a porter would be told to have a ladder ready and wait while the clockman ascended, would the clock, and adjusted the hands. If necessary the train would be kept a miniute or two for him so that he could do the journey down the line in one day.

カンマに挟まれたwould the clockの箇所の読み方がわかりません。
文法的にどのようになっていて、訳出をどうするべきか教えていただきたいのですが。

これではどう考えてもつながりませんので、ひょっとしてwound (wind の過去形）の間違いではないでしょうか。

それだと後ろのadjusted the handsと合わせて「時計のねじを巻いて、針を直す」ということで意味もつながるのですが。

while 節として，

the clockman ascended
～ the clock,
and adjusted the hands
が続いています。

主語は the clockman 共通で，ascended と ～ と adjusted という動詞が３つ A, B, and C の形になっています。
すなわち，～の部分は過去形ということになります。

やはり wind「時計のネジを巻く」の過去形 wound の誤りだと思います。
