（2）He did not choose the means to gain his (end).
彼は目的を達成するためにその手段を選びませんでした。
Go to the (end) of 【his→this?】 street and turn right there.
この通りの端まで行って、そこを右折して下さい。
What shall we have to (end) the meal with？
食事を終えるのに何を食べましょうか？

の意味で使われています。

☆この by の用法は、次の辞書の【前置詞】7．「（程度・差異）・・・（の分）だけ、の差で」の用法です。

＞【has rised by→has risen by】 ではいけませんか？
early this month 「今月初旬」ともう過ぎてしまった過去の時間が示されているので、現在にまで意識が及ぶ「現在完了」の時制とは合いません。

その泥棒はホテルからテレビを盗んで捕えられた。
＞to steal　を　stealing ではいけませんか？
かまいません。次の辞書の【他動詞】4．a. [＋目＋doing]「<人などが><・・・しているところを>見つける」の受け身形と考えられます。
