Trains are sometimes delayed for long periods of time.
列車は長時間送れることが時々あります。

この場合、for long periods of time. ではなくて、for a long timeを使って
Trains are sometimes delayed for a long time.
としたら何か意味といいますかニュアンスが変わってしまうのでしょうか。

「基本的に」ワタシの回答No. 1でOKでした。

"for long periods of time"だと「そういうことが何回か起きる」ということになりますが、どちらにしても「長い間」という意味では実質的に同じになります。

　長時間の遅延が(同じ日などに)断続的に繰り返される場合
> Trains are sometimes delayed for a long time.
　長時間の遅延が起きるが(同じ日などに)断続的に繰り返されることはない場合

No. 3で引用しました例文については、"for a long period of time"と"for long periods of time"で意味の違いはないものの、"for a long period of time"の方が良いという英語ネイティブのコメントが付いています。

おそらくは、"sometimes"が付くような文脈では"for long periods of time"の方が相応しいということだろうと思いますが、この点についてはさらに調べてみます。

「列車は長時間送れることが時々あります。」なのですが、
「Trains are sometimes delayed for long periods of time.」では厳密には
「長時間」が何種類もある、と言っています。

しかし、複数の列車があり、その複数の列車がすべて必ず22分間遅れる、などということは、まずあり得ないので、2つの文は結果的には同じことを意味します。ただ、読み手によっては「Trains are sometimes delayed for long periods of time.」という文を見た時のほうが「きっと、20分遅れることもあれば、50分遅れたり、3時間遅れたりするのかなあ」と考えやすいかもしれませんね。まあ、私なら、両方の文を読んでも、まったく同じ状況を思い浮かべますが。

なお、では、仮に、必ず組になって動く特殊な列車群があるとして（例えば戦時下やSFではありそうですね）、それらが決まって一斉に22分間遅れることが時々あって、しかも毎回22分間なのだとしたら、「The trains」としなければなりません。

"for a long time"と"for long periods of time"の組み合わせでは適切な比較文例を見つけることはできませんでしたので、単数形を使用した"for a long period of time"と複数形を使用した"for long periods of time"の組み合わせで調べてみました。

１さんとはちょっとちがう見解です。

私は　for long periods of time　は１回でも使えると思います。
ちがいは for a long time より長さを強調している感じで，
for a very long time くらいなのではないかと思います。

"for long periods of time"ですと「そういうことが何回もある」という意味になります。

したがって"sometimes delayed for a long time"は「変にしてはおかしな」表現ということになります。
