rate,ratio,propotionの使い分け方

こんにちは。お聞きしたいのですが、

rate, ratio, propotion
はどのようなニュアンスの違い, 使用方法の違いがあるのでしょうか？

類義語の定義を比べるには、英英辞典を引くのが良いですよ。

1.　rate : the number of times something happens, or the number of examples of something within a certain period

ある一定期間における、何かが発生した回数もしくは何かの数。
birth rate　出生率＝1年間の、人口1000人あたりにおける出生数
unemployment rate 失業率＝1ヶ月とか1年間あたりの労働力人口に対する失業者数の割合
crime rate 犯罪発生率＝1年間の人口に対する犯罪件数の割合

日本語で言うと「率」ですね。

2. ratio : a relationship between two amounts, represented by a pair of numbers showing how much bigger one amount is than the other

二つの量の関係。片方がもう片方に対してどのくらい大きいのかを、二つの数字で表す。
The ratio of nursing staff to doctors is 2:1.　看護士と医者の比は2:1だ。
the ratio between profits and incomes　利益と収入の比

日本語で言うと「比」ですね。

3. proportion : a part of a number or amount, considered in relation to the whole

全体との関係を考慮した場合の一部分。
The proportion of women graduates has increased in recent years.　女性の大学院生の割合は近年増加している。

日本語で言うと「割合」です。ただし ratio と同じ用法もあり。
