野球における「握る」

　英語で「握る」はgrasp、hold、grip、claspなど、いろいろ言い方があるようですが、ピッチャーがボールを握る場合、アメリカの野球用語では、どの言葉を使っているのでしょうか。

ネットで検索してみました。（本当はこんなことは誰でもできるので、自分の実体験や知識で言うべきなのですが）

hold は名詞としても使うことがありますが、hold the ball のように動詞として使うことが多いようです。
（ なお、bat に関しては grip the bat とも言うようですが、hold the bat　が圧倒的に多いですね）

ball については grip は圧倒的に名詞として使うようです。

誤解がないように書かせてもらいますね.

ANo.#4に、

私はそれが子供に限定した説明とは全く気がつかなかったんですね。

一般的なご質問で、野球用語の用法だと勘違いしていましたから、

とANo.#4とは違う観点で説明してしまったようです。

誤解がないように書かせてもらいますね.

holdとgripが使われているボールの持ち方を書いたインターネットでの用法を時間をかけて探してきてくれたようで大変恐縮していますが、説明させてくださいね.

確かに表面上はこの両方の言い方が全く同じように使われている（ここまでで、一応質問には答えているわけですが）ようですが、握り方と言う言い方はあくまでもgripだと言う事なんですね.

例えば、箇条書きにして、

pitcher: right handed
ball: curve
grip: xxxxx

と言う感じですね.　そして、ｘｘｘには、grip a ball this way, hold a ball this way.と言う書き込みをするわけですね.

実際にコーチをする場合、小学校4年生あたりまでは、in order to throw a curve, you must hold a ball this wayという事、と言う事になっています.　なぜかと言うと、コーチとして、いくらgripの方法を教えても、ボールが大きすぎて（指が短すぎて）、ボールにひねりをつけながらなげる時に、holdという感じをもたせておかないと、ボールが投げれてしまい、コントロール聞かなくなるわけなんですね.

よって、もう余談に入ってしまっていますが、野球のコーチに携わるものにしては、この違いは大きな物と言えるわけです.

逆にいうと、草野球で握り方を教える時は、そんな気難しい事を言わずに、So, you wanna know how to hold a ball for a knuckeball, heah, Jack? Ok, do this with me. First hold the ball like this with the seams facing the ground. Grip the ball with your fingertips of the 2nd and 3rd fingers real hard at slightly above the seams on the equator. Press your thumb directly toward the center of these two fingertips and never change the direction.

と言うような言い方をするわけですね.　しかし、ここでも、holdとgripのニュアンスの違いが「使える英語」として使われているのがおわかりだと思います.

と言う事で、両方の単語が似たような言い方で（専門的には違うのですが）使われる、と言う事で、私の回答とさせていただきますね.

あまりにも簡単な説明であったので、もう少し実例を見ながらご説明します。

graspは掴む、holdは持つ、gripは強く握る、claspは挟むニュアンスの「握る」と言う動詞のバリエーションとお考えください。

野球の場合は、holdとgripが主に使われますが、動詞としての意味においては、それほど違いはありません。

例えば、ボールを投げる場合でのボールの握り方では、この様な実例があります。

私なりに書かせてくださいね。

確かに野球でボールを握ると言う意味ではholdとgripの二つかよく使われます.

しかしながら使い方が違います.その違いを示さない限り回答になってないと感じるので、説明しますね.

まず、holdとはボールを握る事によってボールがどこかに行かないようにする、という意味なんですね.　これは元々の意味である、保持する、維持する、と言う事からきています.　ですから、ボウリングなどでも、レーンに立ってからボールを投げるまでボールを支えている事をholdと言う言い方をするわけですね.

gripですが、これは保持する為に持つ・握るのではなく変化球を出すための持ち方、握り方、と言うような意味となります.　テニスラケットの持ち方などをEastern grip/Continental grip/wester gripと言うのと同じ使い方です.

よって、ピッチャーがカーブを投げるときの握り方の事はholdとは言わないでgripと言う言い方をするわけです.　ですから、If you want to throw a curve, you have to grip a ball like this way.と言って、you have to hold a ball this wayとは言わないんですね.

しかし、ピッチャーがボールを持ちつづけアンパイヤーから、注意があるときは、You are holding the ball too long!と怒られるわけですね.　＜ｇ＞
