いろんな言い方があり得ると思います。

例文を翻訳すると、
Try to solve the basic cause of the problem

「表面的な事実ばかり云々」を大胆に意訳しまして、「表面に見える問題に直ぐに解決出来る近道を見つけるのに躍起になる」として、上記に辿り着きました。

looking for ~~を見つける、(解決を図るのではなく)(簡単な近道の解決策がないかなと)

「surface」関係を使って平易に書いてみました。

Don't be carried away by the facts (you see) on the surface, but try to solve the problem that lies beneath it.

直訳です。
「あなたの目前で今起きているモノに応急手当的で些細な注意を払うことはせずに(の代わりに)、問題を根本的に解決するようにしなさい。」
