３倍の倍率

Ｂ大学の競争率は３倍だった、とはどう言いますか。
The ratio of applicants to acceptance of B university was 3でしょうか。何だか変な気もします。

　韓国で生活している Native speaker が「Through Whitey's Eyes」というブログの中で、韓国人が書いた日本語の「競争率」に相当する英語表現について下記のような感想を述べています。

　One phrase that I've been hearing occasionally from students is "competition rate." As in "The competition rate for that exam was 7:1." They mean that the number of people who passed the test was 1 in 7.

　I got to thinking about that term. At first I thought of it as Konglish, pure and simple, and wanted to encourage students to nix it from their vocabulary. Then I thought of how we would say it in English, "The ratio of the number of students who took the test to the number of students who passed was 7:1." A bit wordy, isn't it?

　英文の内容は読めば分かりますので説明は避けますが、大変示唆に富む意見ではないかと思います。Native speakerにとっては下記の表現が分かりやすいようです。

　(1) The number of people who passed the test (for B University) was 1 in 7
　(2) The ratio of the number of students who took the test (for B University) to the number of students who passed was 7:1.

競争率、というか熟語にこだわったために、
自然な表現を見失いそうになった例ですね。

applicantをつかうと3分の1とかで表現できるような感じがします。

The ratio of successful applicants for B University examination was 1 to 3.

comptetitionを使用すると
The rate of competition(またはcompetiton rate) for admissions to B University (this year) was 3 to 1（または 3 times).
はどうでしょうか。

ちょっと変えたらどうでしょう。
→The ratio of acceptance of applicants to B Univerity was 1 out of three.

ちょっと長いかも知れませんが、どうでしょう。
The ratio of successful applicants (for admission/entry) to B University is one in three.

これは簡潔かも？
The competition rate for B University was 3.0.

色々な言い方があると思いますので、一例ですが、

・The competition rate for the entrance examination for B University was one out of three.
・The competition rate for the entrance examination for B University was 3 to 1.
・The ratio of applicants to B University admissions was 3 to 1.

基本的には、変ではありませんよ。
acceptance という単語が今ひとつかもしれませんが、
論理的なので意図が伝わるはずです。


私は、こうしてみました。
The competition rate (of entrance exam) of Ｂ university was 3 to 1.
かっこの中は、入試の話題であることが文脈から明らかな場合は省略します。
“3 to 1”は“3:1”と書いてもよいです。
