I have easily over 100 books on my bookshelf that I haven't read. But I really do want to read them! How can I discipline myself to read for fun? I know that it all starts with just one book -- and then another and another -- but I find the full shelves daunting, like a lengthening to-do list. I've even donated some unread books, to try to help the piles.

lengthという言葉は知ってますね。

長さという意味です。
shortという言葉も知ってますよね。短いという意味ですね。
lengthenで、長くするという意味の動詞になり、shortenで、短くするという意味の動詞です。こうやって一緒に覚えるといいです。
なので、まるで、to-do list (やらなきゃならないことのリスト）を長くしているかのように、本棚の全てが私を脅かしているように見える。ということです。

to try to help the piles.　ここのpilesは本の山です。本の山をHelpする、すなわち「私」はあまりに多くの本に圧倒されているわけですから、その山を少しでも減らそうとしているので、それをHelpするため、「山を助ける（手を貸す、支援する）」ということです。

lengthening　　長くなる一方の、ドンドンと長くなる

help the piles　　help the piles (to reduce)　の省略表現でしょう
